Vietti Roero Arneis and lunch at Richmond’s La Grotta, perfect combo

Vietti, Roero Arneis, Castiglioni Faletto, Italy, 2017 is pale yellow-gold in the glass. The nose is filled with fruit aromas such as honeydew melon, nectarines, pears and lime. The palate is rewarded with delicious mandarin orange, peach, green apple and minerals that are balanced with crisp acidity. Vietti, Roero Arneis is medium bodied and has a nice long finish; the green apple goes from start to finish. The Vietti, Roero Arneis was enjoyed with a lunch at La Grotta in Richmond, VA. Puree of Cauliflower with Gorgonzola soup was tamed with the crisp acidity of the wine. Even better was … Continue reading Vietti Roero Arneis and lunch at Richmond’s La Grotta, perfect combo

Avery Brewing, Boulder, CO,Old Jubilation Ale

Avery Brewing Co. Boulder CO, Old Jubilation Ale, 8.3% abv. is dark Mahogany in color with a quickly receding light tan head.   Rich aromas of toasted hazelnuts, sweet roasted malt, caramel and baking spices.  The palate takes over where the nose ends, it takes the aromas and blends them into a mouth pleasing fullness of flavors.  Sip and savor the Old Jubilation Ale.  And even though though alcohol level is big, it is perfect for a warming ale on a cold winter’s night so you might need to have more than one. The aroma reminds me of the sweet … Continue reading Avery Brewing, Boulder, CO,Old Jubilation Ale

Quebec’s Unibroue is celebrating its 25th anniversary and to celebrate they needed a special beer. They also needed a cake for the party, so they put the cake in the bottle, a black forest cake, Ale Gâteau Foret Noire. Ale Gâteau Foret Noire, 10.5%abv, is dark brown in the glass with a quickly receding tan fluffy head. The Ale Gâteau’s nose is filled with dark roasted sweet malt, espresso beans and baking spices.   The palate is filled with a creamy sweet maltiness backed by tart cherry and spices. Skipper’s Creek, Chardonnay, Powhatan, VA, 2015

Skipper’s Creek, Powhatan, VA, 2015, is light golden yellow in the glass. The nose expresses notes of tropical fruit like banana, pineapple, and some red delicious apple. Those tropical fruits explode on the palate especially the pineapple. Lemon and lime sneak in under the pineapple and give this wine the acidity it needs to round out the palate. That welcome acidity leads to a long finish. The Skipper’s Creek, Chardonnay, 2015 was aged in stainless steel, that’s what allows all of the fruit to come out and not be masked by any outside influences. Enjoy this wine with roasted red … Continue reading Skipper’s Creek, Chardonnay, Powhatan, VA, 2015

Sierra Nevada still strong with the latest trendy beer styles

Sierra Nevada Brewing has been a favorite of mine for the last 35 years or so. Starting with Sierra Nevada Pale Ale with it’s hop forward flavors and never looking back to tasteless mass produced beer again. Sierra Nevada, Mills River, North Carolina, Hazy Little Thing IPA, 6.7 ABV, has a big fluffy white head sitting atop a cloudy golden yellow body. A big hoppy, citrusy nose is a sign of great things to come. There is also a mineral flintiness on the back of the nose. The hops are prominent on the front end of the palate balanced with … Continue reading Sierra Nevada still strong with the latest trendy beer styles

Winter Holiday Brews 2018 Part 2

Brooklyn Brewery, Black Chocolate Stout, Winter 2018, 10%abv, is the best example of Russian Imperial Stout brewed today. Worthy of Russian Czars, this malty ale is opaque black with a dark tan head, just like a black hole, no light that enters it will escape. The heady nose is loaded with dark chocolate, black malt and heavily roasted espresso beans. The rich mouth is like a cappuccino with extra shots of espresso with creamy dark chocolate mousse folded into it. On the back of the palate there is a nice acidity that rounds out the full mouth feel. This beer … Continue reading Winter Holiday Brews 2018 Part 2

As the holiday season fast approaches, it is time to figure out what beers to drink sitting by the fireplace or just enjoying family and friends.  Beer is the perfect beverage for these informal gatherings.  Winter ales and lagers tend to have a higher alcohol content to keep the cold winter evenings at bay.
