Samuel Smith, Organic Chocolate Stout, 5% abv. Tadcaster, England is dark black in the glass with a fluffy dark khaki head. The dominant aromas are dark and milk chocolate with hints of dark roasted malt and vanilla in the background. That chocolate dominates the palate with a caramel sweetness behind the chocolate flavors.
All over this is a disappointing brew from Samuel Smith. The chocolate is added to the ale instead of natural chocolate aromas and flavors coming from dark roasted malt and beer making skill. The chocolate is too much and doesn’t feel natural. The ingredients may be organic, but this beer isn’t their strongest effort.
Not everything is bad here though. The Samuel Smith, Organic Chocolate Stout would be a great pairing for a slice of mud pie or an airy milk chocolate mousse with whipped cream.
