Wines of Cariñena Part 2

Cariñena’s Bodegas Paniza was founded in 1953 and has 400 growers in its cooperative encompassing 6,200 acres. They are all committed to high quality and it can be tasted in their wines.
Bodegas Paniza, Viñas Viejas de Paniza Garnacha, 2012 sees six months in French and American Oak. It is dark ruby red and has aromas of red and dark fruit with baking spices and some toasted oak in the background. The rich full mouth feel is filled with dark berries, violets smooth tannins and nice acidity on the long finish.
Bodegas Paniza, Artigazo, 2008 is a blend of 40% Garnacha, 30% Syrah, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and is aged 18 months in oak barrels. It is dark garnet red in the glass with aromas of violets, minerals, oak and earth, behind the berry start. The palate full bodied and well balance between wild strawberries, oak and acid. The palate is layered with these flavors that come together for a long finish.
Bodegas San Valero was formed in 1944 and is comprised of 700 growers in Cariñena with 8,600 acres under vine. 20% of their vines range in age from 30-100 years old, real “old vines.”
Bodegas San Valero, Particular Old Vine Garnacha, 2012 is aged for 12 months in oak. The color is dark cherry red with aromas of tart berries, with apple sweetness with dried fruit in the background. The palate follows the nose with hints of balsamic and the oak well integrated with the fruit. The Bodegas San Valero, Particular Old Vine Garnacha has firm but smooth tannins with a long dry finish.
Bodegas San Valero, Particular Carineña, 2013 is 100% Cariñena and is aged for 14 months in oak barrels. The color is garnet red with blackberry, blueberry and graphite. The palate is a complex blend of berries, balsamic vinegar, dried fruit, baking spices with mouth drying tannins.
Garnacha’s from Cariñena share a lot of similarities. Rich color, berry fruit up front and how well integrated the wine makers blend the fruit with the oak. Another great thing about Garnacha from Cariñena is the price. Most of the wines are priced under $20, many under $15.
