The Wines of Fattoria Selvapiana

Fattoria Selvapiana was founded in 1827 by Florentine banker Michele Giuntini in Chianti’s Rufina section. The winery is still owned and worked by the Giuntini family. Since 2002 the winery began to move in the direction of organic wine making practices.

Fattoria Selvapiana, Chianti Rufina, 2012 is light garnet red. It has aromas of cherry, raspberry, strawberry and wet slate. The palate is fruit forward with bright red berries and backed by minerals. The tannins are light and this has a medium long finish. The Chianti Rufina is very easy to drink, enjoy with a roasted pork loin with roasted summer vegetables.

Fattoria Selvapiana, Chianti Rufina, DOCG, Riserva, “Vigneto Bucerchiale”, 2010 is bright garnet red. The nose is very earthy with mushrooms and red berries with some minerals. 100% Sangiovese, the “Vigneto Bucerchiale” is the flagship wine of Fattoria Selvapiana. Aged for 15 months in French Barriques, 10% new and then bottled and laid down for another 10 months before being released. The berries dominate the front of the palate with the earthy flavors and minerals add balance to the mouth feel. Firm but smooth tannins lead to a long finish. Nice acidity leads to mouth watering till you take your next sip. Enjoy with a rich meaty rib eye with a creamy mushroom sauce.

Fattoria Selvapiana, Fornace Toscana, 2009 is the wineries “Super Tuscan” and it is Exceptional. The Fornace Toscana is a blend of 40% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Sangiovese. It aged in French Barriques for 15 months, 50% new. After final blending it ages another year in the bottle before being released. The result is a dark garnet wine with aromas dark cherry, dark cacao and vanilla. The rich palate is fruit forward with cherry and strawberry with dark cacao, candied orange peel and baking spices. The long persistent finish has smooth tannins and crisp acidity. Drink the Fornace Toscana with the Tuscan Favorite, cinghiale, wild boar.

Fattoria Selvapiana sets the bar high for its wines and they prove to be the highest quality. From the easy drinking Chianti Rufina, the Riserva “Vigneto Bucerchiale” and the Fornace, each wine is crafted to drink at different times and different moods.
